Regina gas prices back above $1

It appears the good old days of 80-cents-a-litre gasoline are behind us — at least in Regina.

A number of Regina outlets have posted prices of around $1.02 per litre of regular. There are also listings, on tracking sites, in the range of the mid-80s to 92 cents per litre.

Jason Toews with the Gas Buddy website told CBC News that gas companies don't typically bother making excuses for a price jump, but sometimes blame a spike on shortages.

"Some of it is warranted because there is a changeover from winter gas to summer gas that takes place in March through early May, so there can be a little bit of ... small shortages of gasoline," he said.

Despite the hike — nine cents a litre in some cases — prices could retreat a few cents again by next week, Toews said.

In the long run, however, he expects prices to continue to increase overall until May.

The price of gasoline at the pump has been on the move since last November.

For several weeks prices were falling, leading to happy motorists and worried finance ministers. At one point a number of stations in the province were selling gas for less than 80 cents per litre.
