German cop on the beat 22 years without driving licence

A policeman from the former communist East Germany has been doing the rounds in his squad car for 22 years without a valid driving licence, a police spokesman told AFP on Friday.

The oversight was discovered when the officer, who has not been named, found he had to wear glasses and had to change his licence which, it emerged, was valid only for tractors and motorbikes, said spokesman Bernard Wessner.

"The man was in the police force during the communist times when policemen did not necessarily do the rounds in a car," said Wessner. "After the Berlin Wall fell, no one noticed he didn't have a licence."

The officer in question faces a fine and a demotion.

Obviously he didnt have any accidents or tickets for 22 years, seems a valid license is really not necessary , considering the beginnings of his driving experiences in the Russian sector. Leave him alone.

Seems that his police agency is at fault. Didn't they ask him for a drivers license when he transferred to his new job 22 years ago? Doesn't his department have regular checks for valid drivers licenses? It seems a tad harsh to demote him when it sounds like the personnel department is at fault.

In my opinion, licenses aren't all that important. Even without a license for 22 years, this cop could be the best driver in the world. Contrast that to me. I've had a marriage license for 22 years and STILL have no clue what I'm doing....

In those 22 years, it never occurred to his department to make sure that all of its officers had valid driver's licenses?

And your reward for turning yourself in is demotion and a fine.
Really pays to be honest doesn't it. LOL

A fine and a demotion for what: not meeting some administrative requirement? Screw that! If he didn't cause any accidents or incidents, just make him get the freaking license, you bureaucratic pinheads!

That must be the cop who pulled me over in Germany for driving too slow on the autobahn. I handed him my Library card by accident. So he wrote me a ticket for reading too slow.

How often does one hear about a police officer being pulled over, anyway? I think the standard motto is, We enforce laws, we do not obey them!
