Greenland opens diplomatic office in Washington, D.C.

Greenland has opened a diplomatic representation office, within the Embassy of Denmark, in Washington DC.

Inuuteq Hold Olsen is the Head of Representation.

He says the goal is to further Greenland's goals of self-determination, while creating economic and political ties with other nations — most notably, the United States.

“In this case it’s important that we also have much closer relations with our neighbours to the west, meaning the United States as well as Canada.”

The Washington office is Greenland's second diplomatic representation abroad.

The first office was opened in Brussels in 1992.

Holm Olsen says that office has played an important role in the evolving relationship between Greenland and the European Union.

A former colony of Denmark, Greenland established a Home Rule government in 1979.

This island is now in the process of gradually taking control of most of its affairs, except for foreign affairs and defence, which remains in the hands of the Danish government.
