Halifax bus union preparing for lengthy strike

Striking Metro Transit workers in Halifax said Sunday they are preparing for a long contract dispute. Talks between the Amalgamated Transit Union and the city remained at a standstill over the weekend.

Sunday marked day four of the strike, which has been affecting more than 90,000 daily users.

Picket lines remained up across the city Sunday afternoon, and union president Ken Wilson said people should be prepared for a messy commute Monday morning.

"I think the longer this goes, the appetite from the public is going to get vicious — very angry and aggressive. I don't know if it's going to be [directed] at the union or the employer."

Nova Scotia's Liberal Party leader, Stephen McNeil, called on Premier Darrell Dexter to help resolve the strike, saying the walkout is having a significant impact on the half of the province's population that lives in the capital region.

MacNeil said he wondered why the premier hadn't offered the services of the Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Advanced Education to try and resolve the dispute, or made a telephone call to urge the two sides back to the bargaining table.

On Thursday, Premier Darrell Dexter said he wasn't getting involved in the dispute.

More than 700 workers walked off the job just after 1:30 a.m. ET on Thursday, after union representatives rejected Metro Transit's latest proposal.

The unions are only there to serve themselves while the worker loses, so get back to work and be happy you even have a job.

Long strikes are unfortunate, the worker never makes back what they have lost. They should stop paying the senior union officials and the politicians while it goes on to give them some incentive to settle.

Wilson is a moron...of course the public is going to get pissed at the union. I am no fan of the employer but they have bent over backwards to appease the union. The problem is that the union wants it all and they're going to alienate the public because of their greed. I don't know of any employees other than bus drivers who can pick their own hours. As a former member of this union I have seen first hand the scam that they have going regarding overtime and how much money these people cost the city, and in the long run, the public. Dexter should grow a pair and legislate these malcontents back to work!!

You must have been one of the ones who didn't want to work after your 40 hour week And of course no weekends or holidays and especially no nights .You couldn't have been there too long to find out what it was really like to be a bus driver . They work hard for there money and deserve every cent . While manangement gives themselves big raises every year and do not have a clue what is going on . Someone should check and see what there wages are before you pick on the workers . They haven't got a clue how to run a bus company or manange people . Manangement is supposed to be able to do the job that they are mananging Or at least have a clue what is going on .

There are a lot of people looking for any kind of work right now. Leave it to the unions to start talking strike. It is common knowledge that the only union worker is one who can't hold a job of their own. One more reason why unions need to be abolished.

lazy shits, go back to work...only need grade 12 and a clean driving record to make $70K a year...must be nice...maybe some of the schooll teachers who went to university for two degrees should quit their job and be given one of your better paying ones...

and yet, they still want more money, greedy, greedy, greedy...i say, fire the lot and start with new drivers, not like it'll take long to replace a bunch of uneducated people to drive a bus and know how to tell time.

Bet any money that this goes to Arbitration and the Union gets more that what they asked for and then the mare can look into CBC camera and claim "The Union did us in!" and the news anchor gets 200 grand per year to introduce this Halifax Hillarity!
