Halifax police seeking man who offered girl $100 for a ride

Halifax Regional Police are asking for the public's help in identifying a man who they say approached a girl in Halifax and offered her $100 to drive her to school.

An 11-year-old girl was walking on Castle Hill Drive, off Kearney Lake Road, on her way to Grosvenor Wentworth Park School when a man in a car pulled up next to her at about 8:40 a.m. on Monday.

The man rolled down the passenger side window and offered the girl $100 to drive her to school, said police.

She ran away and immediately told school officials what happened. She was not hurt.

"It's very concerning given the age of the student," said Halifax Regional Police Const. Pierre Bourdages.

"Until we speak with this man and determine what he was up to, it is very startling and we are asking anyone with information about the man, or the man himself to call police and give us some details as to what happened there."

The suspect is described as a white man in his 40s with short brown hair. At the time of the incident, he was driving a light-coloured car and was smoking a cigarette.

"She did the right thing. She ran away and that's the information we have on this individual," said Bourdages.

"We would remind parents to have a talk with their children about the importance of not talking to strangers. And if they encounter something similar, to report it as soon as possible to a teacher or any trusted adult."
