Halifax to review Remembrance Day parking violations

Halifax waives Remembrance Day parking violations

The mayor of the Halifax Regional Municipality says parking tickets issued on Sackville Street on Tuesday will be reviewed, in light of complaints from people who questioned how appropriate it was to ticket vehicles in the vicinity of large Remembrance Day ceremonies.

The city issued 14 tickets on Tuesday on the south side of Citadel Hill. The municipality said the parking tickets were not issued for meter violations, but were issued because the vehicles were in no-parking zones.

"I'd rather we didn't ticket on Remembrance Day anywhere near a cenotaph," Mayor Mike Savage said while weighing in on the parking issue on Mainstreet.

"I also understand that a police officer saw this and suggested there shouldn't be any more tickets handed out."

Savage said it's his understanding the tickets will be reviewed. On a day like Remembrance Day, he said tickets should not be issued to anybody with a veterans' licence plate or who has mobility issues.

It's unknown whether any of the 14 vehicles ticketed had a veterans' plate or if the driver had mobility issues.

Imperial Parking, which runs a couple of private lots on Granville Street and at the corner of Sackville Street and Bell Road, told Mainstreet it would void all violation notices issued in its lots between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Imperial Parking spokesperson was unsure of how many violation notices were issued, but did confirm there were some.

Savage said the municipality should look into opening up parking on Remembrance Day next year and perhaps allowing it on streets where it's not normally allowed.

"I think that's a good point and something well worth looking at," he said.
