Haze from wildfires reaches Calgary
Smoke from wildfires in Kootenay National Park and south of the border is contributing to a hazy atmosphere in Calgary.
Environment Canada says its satellites show smoke is travelling into Alberta from wildfires in the U.S., likely from Idaho.
Another wildfire on the border between B.C. and Alberta is also contributing to the haze. The blaze has grown from 100 to 400 hectares in the past 24 hours at the north end of Kootenay National Park.
Fire management officer Gregg Walker says the fire has been stoked by weather conditions.
"The temperature came up and the wind came up both at the same time, creating extreme fire danger conditions and the wind then blew it into some new areas of forest that were adjacent to the fire and it spread," he said.
Walker said the fire is not currently threatening Highway 93 through the park, but it can be seen from the road. He said firefighters are are hoping for rain to help battle the blaze.
Meanwhile smoke is drifting into Banff, Jasper and has reached parts of Calgary.
