Thousands of support staff for Alberta Health Services hope heading back the bargaining table can cure a rift with their employer after voting 95 per cent for rejecting a mediator’s report.
The workers’ union president said workers’ issues range from wages to disrespectful treatment.
“They are the foundation and the backbone of the entire health-care system, without whom doctors, nurses and other health care professionals can’t do their jobs,” said Guy Smith, Alberta Union of Public Employees president.
Kevin Davediuk, negotiator for AUPE, told media one discrepancy between the two sides has been pay, and the union is asking for a six per cent hike over two years.
Workers earn from $14 to $35 hourly, he said, logging just 24 hours a week on average.
