Heavy snow, strong winds expected in central Newfoundland

New Brunswick weather: Schools closed as blizzard pounds province

Heavy snowfall and blowing snow is set to roll through parts of Newfoundland and Labrador on Monday, with Environment Canada advising people to postpone travel plans until the system passes.

Alerts have been issued for most areas of central Newfoundland, with a winter storm set to begin along Newfoundland's south coast and spread northward through Monday afternoon and evening.

The system should dump between 10 cm and 20 cm of snow in affected areas before it tapers off by Tuesday morning.

Strong east to southeasterly winds are also anticipated, with gusts as strong as 80 km/h set to create poor visibility.

Warnings have also been issued for the Northern Peninsula east and special weather statements are in effect for the rest of the island and southeastern Labrador.

Environment Canada said blowing snow and snow squalls will make for poor visibility on Newfoundland's west coast, while blowing snow is expected in the east but will mix with rain overnight on Monday, only to redevelop back into snow in the northeastern parts of the island by Tuesday morning.

Environment Canada said highways, roads, walkways and parking lots could become dangerous for driving, and are asking people to postpone non-essential travel in the province until conditions improve.
