Hockey Night in Canada Song Quest seeks next great hockey song

The puck drops Saturday night in a nation-wide contest to find Canada’s next great hockey song.

CBC-TV's Hockey Night In Canada along with CBC Music are launching Song Quest, a competition to find a new pop or rock song that reflects the game of hockey, such as the teamwork, high energy or determination required.

East Coast rocker Joel Plaskett will produce a studio version of the winning song, which will be performed live during Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada on Jan. 18, 2014.

The winning track will also be included in one of Hockey Night in Canada’s prime time montages, which open every broadcast. HNIC's montages, which have earned acclaim from media outlets such as NBC and the New York Times, have previously featured music by artists ranging from Adele and Radiohead to Sam Roberts and Blue Rodeo.

“There are only a couple of things that are really iconic in musicians lives…Going to an arena and hearing your song during a hockey game is big, but the top of the heap is Hockey Night in Canada. I have had my song featured a couple of times and the thrill never gets old,” Blue Rodeo lead singer Jim Cuddy told CBC Music.

Former NHLer Theo Fleury is among the judges lined up for Song Quest. He will be joined on the panel by other former players as well as professional musicians, who will be announced shortly.

The contest opens Oct. 5 at CBCMusic.ca/songquest.
