    Ice jams on Bulkley River prompt evacuation alert

    Three rural properties in northwestern B.C. have been put on evacuation alert, as ice jams on the Bulkley River threaten to flood parts of the Bulkley Valley.

    The ice jams have been caused by a stretch of frigid weather, followed by rising temperatures and rain.

    The Bulkley-Nechako Regional District says the problem area is between Kidd Road and a bridge that crosses Highway 16.

    The regional district urges residents living six kilometres east of Telkwa to be ready to leave on very short notice.

    It says saying water levels could rise quickly and it's difficult to predict exactly where flooding may occur.

    In May, 2011 an evacuation order was issued for for the Ebenezer Flats area outside of Smithers.

    In April 2009, 16 people were forced from their homes near Smithers, B.C., when water rose faster than expected due to an ice jam on the Bulkley River.

    Smithers is 15 km north of Telkwa.
