Idle No More protest hits N.S. highways
Protesters marched along two highways Friday, denouncing a federal bill that many opponents say undermines the treaty rights of aboriginals.
Millbrook Chief Bob Gloade said Bill C-45 includes changes that endanger the environment.
"With over 32,000 lakes in Canada, only 97 are considered protected under that act, so the things that we're concerned about are the protection of the water, the fish, the habitat, the environment," he said.
The Idle No More demonstrations on Highway 102 and the Canso Causeway were held as part of a national day of action.
More than 100 people took part in the protest near Millbrook, bringing traffic on Highway 102 to a crawl.
There were similar traffic tie-ups on the Canso Causeway.
In addition to changes to land management on reserves, the omnibus budget bill includes an extension of a hiring credit for small businesses and pay raises for judges.
