SIDNEY, B.C. - Green Party Leader Elizabeth May has won her party's nomination to run in the B.C. riding of Saanich-Gulf Islands in the next federal election.

"It is so heartening to receive such an overwhelming vote of confidence from the grassroots of our membership," May said Saturday. May said she's now ready to get on with the real campaign of winning a seat in Parliament.

May was fighting for the nomination against Stuart Hertzog, who filed a complaint with Election Canada.

Hertzog alleged that money was illegally transferred to the party to help May win the nomination.

Saanich-Gulf Islands has been held for the past 12 years by Conservative Gary Lunn, the minister of state for sport.

May will make a second attempt to beat a cabinet minister.

Last October, she ran in the Nova Scotia riding of Central Nova but lost to Defence Minister Peter MacKay.
