This year's top entertainment searches have all been overshadowed by the biggest story of the year: the death of pop icon, Michael Jackson. The singer's untimely death last June and the outrageous rumours that followed rocketed him to number one in searches. But MJ wasn't the only celeb death people were interested in. 'Charlie's Angels' star Farrah Fawcett (who passed away the same day as Jackson) was the second most searched, followed by Natasha Richardson, Patrick Swayze and 'Angel' star Andy Hallett.
This year's top searches weren't all gloom-and-doom. 'Twilight' fans (popularly known as Twi-Hards) logged onto Yahoo! Canada and searched for the vampire romance so frequently that it became the top-searched movie. So it comes as no surprise that the sequel, 'New Moon', (which came out in November and made $140M its first weekend) was second on the list. Twi-Hards came out in full force and made the franchise's star, heartthrob Robert Pattinson, the eight-most searched for celebrity.
But in a year dominated by big-name superstars, a middle-aged Scottish lady who had a 'Dream' became an international sensation when she appeared on 'Britain's Got Talent.' Susan Boyle, our third-most searched celeb, rose to fame through the millions of YouTube hits for her performance of 'I Dreamed A Dream' and continued to intrigue us with her meltdown, makeover and enchanting music.
Of course we can't talk about meteoric rises from obscurity without mentioning Jon and Kate Gosselin of the reality TV series 'Jon & Kate Plus 8'. The surreal drama surrounding the ex-couple fascinated us: from allegations that Kate cheated with their bodyguard, to Jon's antics with his much-younger girlfriend, to their bitter divorce feud. As a result of our fascination with the couple, the show was in our top 10 searches for TV.
But not even the daily antics of the Gosselins could stop reality TV powerhouse 'American Idol' from claiming the number one spot in TV searches. Simon Cowell would probably like to think that his grouchy behaviour is behind the show's popularity, but this season, an over-the-top singer named Adam Lambert got our attention with his amazing vocals and glam rock performances.
And we can't speak about glam without mentioning the most glamourous woman of the year, Lady Gaga. The breakout singer had four top 10 songs such as 'Just Dance' and 'Poker Face' but it was also her outrageous style that made her the fifth most searched for celebrity.
