Iqaluit woman nearly freezes to death

A 59-year-old woman was found nearly frozen to death in Iqaluit early Wednesday morning.

RCMP say they found her semi-conscious in a parking lot in the 500 block of Iqaluit after responding to a call around 2 a.m. Wednesday.

The woman was lying face down in the snow. According to Environment Canada, the temperature at the time was –23.9 C, with a wind chill making it feel closer to –38 C.

The Iqaluit resident was taken to Qikiqtani Regional Hospital where she was treated for severe hypothermia and severe frostbite. She was later sent to Ottawa for further treatment and is stable condition.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Iqaluit detachment.

They're also advising people to dress for the weather, and to ensure that people are physically able to get home safely.

so sad to see the ignorant types making rude comments with no facts to back up what they say ..its a shame your parents never raised you to respect the lives of others regardless of their race .. your life quality must be very poor with such resentment and hate that you need to share it5 with others and then hope for encouragement from your like minded pin head losers !

It happens here too. I remember one day a few years ago. A young guy was at a party in Barrie. He left the party to go across the road but was so drunk he fell into the snowbank right out side his door.
No one noticed cause it was about 1 am. The temp was -10c

They found him next day froze in the snow bank. The sad part is a neighbor did notice him but instead of rushing to help they called the police by that time it was to late.

"The", don't you have work to do? Go clean their neighbours' walks. Do something constructive instead of whining like a spoiled jerk.

The good news is she got out of Iqaluit alive. The bad news is she's in Ottawa where she might die of boredom. I hope she makes it.

Strange only for the fact that people in Iqaluit usually look out for each other. I was there in February once, and a shopkeeper wouldn't let me go outside until the taxi came, and I was a an outsider.

Drinking in Iqaluit is a full time pastime. Tis the way of the North. I'm sure the RCMP rescue people from sno banks all the time. I"m sure they have a special patrol just to look for bodies every Saturday night and other nights as well.

I seen the drunks in Kenora many years ago. 24 hours a day there were drunks every where.

      How sad it was.

You would think that northern people would know how to get dress for winter very cold days.

I don't feel bad for the adults who can take care of themselves. I feel sorry for the animals that are left outside with no homes and freezing to death out there. It brakes my heart to know that cat's and dogs have to fight for their lives in the cold freezing weather.
