John McCrae school put in secure mode during police investigation

John McCrae Secondary School in Barrhaven was in secure mode for an hour Friday afternoon over police concerns that an investigation at a nearby site could have "potential ramifications" for the school.

A "shelter in place" security protocol was put in place at the school on Malvern Drive at 1:20 p.m. The exterior doors to the building were locked and students and staff were not permitted to leave but classes continued as usual. The secure mode was lifted around 2:15 p.m., on the recommendation of police.

According to an Ottawa-Carleton District School Board publication, "The reasons for shelter in place will vary but in all cases the persons are not in immediate danger and can continue their daily routine within the confines of the school building."

Ottawa police said it could not comment on the nature of the case because the investigation is ongoing.
