Jonathan Toews community club price tag rises by $4M

The cost of expanding the Jonathan Toews recreational facility in River Park South has gone up by $4 million.

In 2013, the project had an estimated cost of $13.5 million. The city and the province would each contribute $4.76 million. The balance of costs to build the fieldhouse would come from the community club. But the final number has increased.

The budget for the expansion is now set at a total $17.9 million, up $4 million in just over two years. The city, province and the community club are sharing the costs for the facility.

Both the city and the province are kicking in more money for the project. The city's share of the expansion has ballooned to $6.7 million and the province will contribute $7.0 million. The rest is being raised by the community centre in the form of a mortgage guaranteed by the city.

Correction : A previous version of the story said the initial cost of the project was $9.5 million. In fact, the initial cost is $13.5 million.(May 29, 2015 4:01 PM)
