Justin Bieber to star in basketball film

Justin Bieber is cast as a young basketball star in a film to be shot next year, in a role opposite Mark Wahlberg.

Wahlberg, star of The Fighter, defended the choice of Bieber for the role in an MTV interview Wednesday, saying he wasn’t put off by Bieber’s lack of experience. The Stratford, Ont., native has appeared in the documentary Never Say Never but otherwise has no big-screen exposure.

“I see the guy and spent time with him and you see what he does and how he does it, and then you actually have a conversation with him and it’s there,” Wahlberg said.

Wahlberg, the former Marky Mark, has made the jump from singer to actor himself and also has several credits as an executive producer.

Wahlberg told MTV he has an “intuition” that Bieber is right for the as-yet-untitled film. The drama takes place in the gritty world of street basketball and involves a young player (Bieber) who is mentored by an older man (Wahlberg himself). Ian Edelman is working on the script but studio Paramount pushed for Bieber as the young player.

Wahlberg compares the film with The Color Of Money, the Martin Scorsese classic, which starred Paul Newman as the pool pro coaching a young Tom Cruise. Wahlberg said the film is set to go into production in 2012.

Bieber took in a Raptors game in Toronto Wednesday and also is featured singing Drummer Boy with Busta Rhymes in an ad celebrating the end of the NBA lockout.

How ridiculous! He can't even sing. I saw him on Dancing With The Stars and I had to mute him out...he was that bad. I swear, they find someone on UTube and because he gets a bunch of teeny bopper girls screaming over him...they give him a acting part? That's one film I will not be seeing.

i think it is good that a older star stick up for a younger star. Also, it is good that justin bieber is doin something different and looking at an opportunity. The music business do not last long.

You think it's good that an older star "sticks" it up a younger star?..
Well in boober's case he/she probably would like it..lol..

it lasts longer if you have substance. if you are lucky enough to be seen, and embraced by a public that either sees live music and buys music, and have have substance you will live forever. unfortunately that's not really the case anymore. and the world needs substance in its art-not necessarily a "commodity"

Paramount, you are STUPID for casting this lesbo looking freakazoid in this movie. Hopefully your so called "basketball movie" bombs. Bieber sounds like he's suckin' a d*** singing, what the hell makes you think he can act? Cast someone with actual talent, like Jaden Smith. He's a great kid actor.
      • Time Bender 4 months ago
Um, Justin was already in a tv show and he did quite well actually. Jaden Smith never smiles and he seems kind of arrogant. I have read many people's comments about Jaden and most of them feel the same way I do.
      • Jessica 4 months ago
He can sing so don't say anything. Like you could do any better. He's acted before and Jaden Smith can't act that well. I don't think they couldv'e gotten a better actor. So you're probably another jealous freak who can't even act or sing. If they wanted a bad actor they wouldv'e chose YOU.

Awesome! I believe Justin Bieber will be an even better actor than a signer. Male singers rarely have the limelight for more then a decade. JB's got a bright future ahead of him as an actor and I say he should go for it! Don't go the Mylie Cyrus route and start becoming over-sexualized in music videos - quick way to bust up a career.
    • Sunny  •  Houston, United States  •  4 months ago
The difference is that Mark Wahlberg went from singer to a great actor. Bieber will go from "singer" to poop. Y'all see him in CSI?
