Labour Day weekend: 5 fun things to do
The calendar may say we have a few weeks of summer yet to go, but we all know Labour Day weekend is the beginning of the end.
Here are five great ways to get out of the house and let loose:
1. Take your pick
This is the best time of the year to eat fresh and buy local.
In Aylesford, Dempsey Corner Orchards is now offering U-pick peaches, plums, blueberries, potatoes and early Gravenstein apples. They’re open every day.
As an added bonus this year, they’ve hidden five scarecrows through the orchards. Find all five and win a prize.

2. Run!
The annual Butter Trail Run goes Sunday morning in the beautiful downtown Tatamagouche.
Kids can run the 1.6-kilometre course starting at 8:45. The main events are the 5km and 10km runs, which start at 9:30. There is a fee to register. Head for the North Shore Rec Centre. http://buttertrailfunrun.blogspot.ca/p/about.html
3. Beach, baby
With sun in the forecast, this one is a bit of a no-brainer: how about a day trip to a new beach? The Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service is on deck at two dozen beaches now through Monday.
4. Go back in time
They’re channelling the 18th Century at the Halifax Citadel this weekend, creating a military encampment inside the fort.
Parks Canada calls it a "living history" event, featuring cannons,muskets and authentic drills. Regular admission fees still apply.
5. Get unplugged
Head for Grand Mira North Road in Cape Breton for the Acoustic Roots Festival, running Friday through Sunday.
You’ll find a range of home-grown artists performing folk, blues, country and Celtic music.
There are songwriters’ circles planned for Saturday and Sunday. The event helps raise money for the Two Rivers Wildlife Park.
