LCBO alleges employee fraud of almost $2M

The LCBO is alleging that a veteran employee in charge of selling liquor to Toronto-based diplomats set up thousands of fake sales worth almost $2 million.

The Crown corporation has launched a civil suit against the employee, who was fired Friday, and a court-ordered injunction has frozen all of the employee's assets.

In an audit, the LCBO discovered more than $300,000 in funds were unaccounted for last year.

It was also found that between 2005 and last year $1.6 million in product was sent to the LCBO's Toronto warehouse, but the money was never remitted.

The LCBO said in a public statement that it had taken "swift action to deal with this matter and ensure the circumstances that led to this fraudulent activity no longer exist."

The statement says the LCBO "removed the [now former] employee accused of fraud from the workplace and significantly changed its practices related to diplomatic sales …"

The matter has been referred to the police and the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario for further investigation, the statement said.

The LCBO said it will seek "every legal remedy," including hiring outside help with forensic accounting and fraud expertise, to recover the missing money.

The LCBO is also discussing a claim for losses with its insurer, the statement said.

Ontario is such a socialistic province where the government owns liquor and beer distribution casino and gambling. As civil servants working in these areas they are needlessly overpaid with taxpayers money.

Privatize? Canadian style, just like BC. Check out the prices here. All higher than government liquor stores. When the politicians hand out the franchises to their buddies what do you expect. The government still gets their cut and the public gets the shaft.

The LCBO is not the only reason that alcohol prices are high. Alcohol sold in Canada is subject to the (absurdly high) Federal Excise Tax Act. Just check out just what it costs the manufacturer to sell a bottle of alcohol and then check the the taxes imposed on it.The LCBO however, is mandated (in a way) by the Ontario Government to set prices as to curb alcohol consumption. Its these same "clowns" that set these rules, who willingly buy their drinks by illegal means. No wonder why many regular folks cross the border to buy the stuff!

The real question is; why is there no annual audit? why is there no oversight of employees in charge of these departments surely each and every LCBO Store & warehouse should have an internal audit with a completre audit of the LCBO by an outside accountancy and audit firm every two or three years! I am an x Ontarian and back in the 50s thru the 80s it was run quite efficiently.

What I find comical is the comment that the LCBO will discuss a claim for losses with its insurer. What the hell does the insurer have to do with the incompetence of the LCBO? Maybe the Government should discus a claim for losses with LCBO's top management.
They get paid good bucks to run this crown corporation and obviously they're not doing it. Maybe now's the time to follow the steps of other provinces and downsize the LCBO by privatizing liquor outlets.

OLG, e-Health now LCBO. Get the government out of the business of business. Clearly they are fraud waiting to happen. Perhaps the taxpayers should seek charges against the individual and his overseeers right up to the top (Dalton). This is theft of our money and as a taxpayer I demand names.

Prices would probably drop if the LCBO didn't have their monopoly.

Exclusive: Saudi oil boost could calm markets: Senator Schumer
