Leaders of a central Newfoundland town have found a creative way of keeping the doors open to a privately owned training institution.
The Town of Lewisporte had wanted to buy Die Trac College after council learned the owners were selling. Council was afraid the college might move or close, leaving the town without an important institution for trades and skilled labour.
But the Municipalities Act makes it illegal for the town to acquire the business.
Instead, the non-profit Lewisporte Community College Corp. was created. It was able to obtain financing and now owns the college.
"We wanted to ensure, as best we could, that the programs stayed here and the building was utilized to its fullest," said Mayor Brian Sceviour.
Die Trac offers courses for jobs such as carpenters and millwrights.
Sceviour said the new owners have already struck a deal with the Marine Institute to expand the course selection in the spring.
