Peel police are investigating a deadly accident between a vehicle and a cyclist Tuesday evening in Mississauga. A male cyclist was pronounced dead on the scene after being hit by a car just after 6:30 p.m. at Bloor Street and Runningbrook Drive, between Dixie and Tomken Roads. The intersection has been shut down for the investigation and will likely remain closed into Wednesday morning.
Almost 80 jobs are being slashed by Canada's largest newspaper in an attempt to save money. The Toronto Star, owned by Torstar Corp. plans to cut 78 editing jobs which is about a fifth of its editorial staff. The move will save about $4 million annually. Most of the jobs are likely going to be contracted out to Pagemasters North America, which is a unit of the Canadian Press.
A prisoner escaped this morning after two masked, gun-toting men overpowered guards at Hamilton General Hospital. Police say the guards were assaulted and knocked down by two armed men as they were leaving with the prisoner. A deer was caught Tuesday morning, resting near the corner of University Ave. and Dundas St., well away from where it should be. Animal officials ended up using a tranquilizer and a net to remove the deer to a safer location.

The Art Gallery of Ontario is hoping the King Tut exhibit that opens today will draw the same kind of attention as a similar one 30 years ago. Toronto police have identified a 32-year-old man fatally shot on Sunday as a Vancouver resident. Police say Shane Kelter died of gunshot wounds to the torso. Police were called to Bay Street and Wellesley Street on Sunday after gunshots were reported. Police say officers found Kelter on the sidewalk with obvious signs of trauma. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Haydain Neale, the frontman for the Juno Award-winning group Jacksoul, has died of cancer at age 39. He died Sunday at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, after a seven month battle with lung cancer, the family said in a release Monday. Toronto Hydro is trying to find the cause of a power outage which has left about 5,000 customers in Scarborough in the dark. Just before 6 p.m. power went out in an area bounded by Highway 401 to the north, Manse Road to the east, Coronation Drive to the south and Galloway Road to the west. An inmate at Toronto's Don Jail will appear in court Dec. 1 to face a charge of assaulting another prisoner.
