Lost love birds reunited with Halifax owner
A pair of lost love birds have been found and reunited with their owner, thanks to a few kindhearted strangers.
On Monday, Mike Parkyn was working on a construction project in a backyard in central Halifax when he was startled by something flying around his head.
"I was just standing there by the chop saw and next thing I know it was just a big flutter happening right here, and after fighting the wasps and the bees all day, I just went into little girl mode and freaked right out," he said.
It wasn't a wasp, but a little lost love bird.
Since the rocky first meeting, Parkyn and the men he works with became fond of the small parrot.
"I got it off of his shoulder and coaxed it onto my hand and put it on my shoulder. We walked around with it and then couldn't find anybody, so we put it in the laundry basket and had it out here while we were working all day," said Cody Dorton.
The crew found an old birdcage to safely keep their new feathered friend until the owner could be found.
After hearing the story on CBC Tuesday, Kevin Doucette called the newsroom, saying he believed the bird was his. He said "Big Bird" and another one of his four love birds escaped Saturday while he was cleaning their cages.
On Wednesday, Big Bird and Doucette were reunited.
"Big Bird's back home now, I'm thankful for that. I guess this is like a little miracle, prayers are answered sometimes," he said.
Doucette said his other missing love bird has also been found and will be dropped off at his central Halifax apartment on Thursday.
Contractor Byron Goldsmith said if they weren't able to find Big Bird's owner, it would have come down to an arm wrestling match to see who would keep the bird.
