MacAulay wins in Cardigan

Lawrence MacAulay greets a supporter.

Lawrence MacAulay, who has represented the eastern P.E.I. riding of Cardigan since 1988, was returned to Parliament Monday.

The Conservatives fielded former provincial cabinet minister Mike Currie but MacAulay still won fairly comfortably.

The Conservatives' best hope was the vote in Stratford, the riding's largest community and the Island's fastest growing. Those polls reported early and went for MacAulay.

Currie resigned his seat in the provincial legislature to run against MacAulay. He told CBC News Monday night there is no going back for him.

He won't try to regain his seat in October.

"I'm not going back at provincial politics, no," said Currie.

"I made a decision to run here and I gave it my best and it didn't work out. So I'll just move forward from here."

There's been speculation Currie's now in line for a political appointment, but he said Harper has not promised anything.
