Man killed on Hwy 1 survived rollover, then hit by semi truck

N.W.T. man's suicide prompts call for review of his depression treatment

A Yellowknife man who died on Highway 1 on Wednesday survived a single vehicle accident, only to be struck and killed by a semi truck.

N.W.T. Chief Coroner Cathy Menard says the 39-year-old man was driving a one-ton pickup truck heading southbound early Wednesday. He was travelling with a dog.

The man lost control of his vehicle near Kakisa and went off the road. Both the man and the dog survived the accident.

Menard says the man emerged onto the highway in darkness just after 5 a.m. and was struck and killed by the semi truck.

A passerby drove to Fort Providence to get cellphone service to contact police. Police received a call about the accident at 5:40 a.m. Menard says more immediate aid would not have made a difference in this case.

RCMP and the coroner's office continue to investigate.

"The traffic analysis team will be examining, reviewing and determining what has happened in this incident," Menard said.

At this time the driver of the semi isn't facing any charges.

The man's remains are in Edmonton awaiting a post mortem exam.
