Man pulled from Lake Ontario dies in hospital

A man pulled from Lake Ontario Sunday morning has died.

Firefighters responded to the call at 1225 Lake Shore Boulevard West, the address of the Argonaut Rowing Club, at 8:47 a.m. ET.

When they arrived, the man was still in the water, according Toronto Fire Services Capt. Mike Strapko. The crew used a boat from the rowing club to reach the man and bring him to shore. He was without vital signs when he was pulled from the cold water.

The man was rushed to St. Joseph's Health Centre. Firefighters prepared to apply continuos chest compressions — a process than can take up to ten hours — as hospital staff attempted to raise his internal temperature.

Despite the effort to revive him, the man was pronounced dead shortly before 11 a.m. ET.

According to Strapko, it's unclear how he ended up in the lake or how long he had been in the water before firefighters arrived.

Strapko warns that Lake Ontario stays cold throughout the year and that people should stay at least 15 feet back from any shoreline at all times.
