Man. worries about federal spending cuts

Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger expects little to change between the province and the federal government now that the Conservatives have a majority.

The Stephen Harper government is receptive to ideas coming from Manitoba, Selinger said, but cautiously added he is concerned about possible spending cuts coming to sectors like education and family services.

Selinger said it took a decade for Canada to recover from spending cuts in the 1990s.

"What we've seen in the past is when one level of government tries to solve its deficit problems by passing it on to another level of government there can be some negative consequences," Selinger said.

He wants to see the federal government continue with its current five-year plan to get out of the recession without drastic cuts.
