Maple Leaf Gardens' time capsule found

Crews working on the reconstruction of Toronto's iconic Maple Leaf Gardens have found something that just might be a historical treasure — but exactly what it is remains a mystery.

Maple Leaf Gardens was built in the midst of the Depression and opened its doors on Carlton Street in 1931.

For more than 60 years the hockey team, which bears the same name as the building, played on its ice — until February of 1999 when the team moved to the Air Canada Centre.

Maple Leaf Gardens is now being reconstructed, remodelled and refurbished, to make it into a giant Loblaws grocery store, as well as an athletic centre for Toronto's Ryerson University.

But recently, when crews were removing some stone flooring near the old entrance they found something.

According to Randall Gwizd who was working on the site, it was bricklayers who discovered the treasure.

"All I know is what the super[intendent] told me. The bricklayers found it by the front doors underneath the stone that marks the name of the building and they lifted it up and found the time capsule."

Gwizd said the workers found the capsule as well as "a rule book from 1931, a newspaper and I think something else."

"Lowblaws came down and took [the capsule] right away," said Gwizd "Nobody really got to see it."

In an email statement to CBC News Loblaws confirmed it had taken possession of the capsule but wouldn't say much more.

"Thanks for your enquiry. We have found articles during construction, but they are currently being assessed and validated. We will be in touch once we have more information. Thanks for your interest," the company said.

Phil Pritchard, curator at the Hockey Hall of Fame, had no idea the time capsule existed but he's excited to think about what might be inside.

"When I heard about it this morning it was pretty amazing," he told CBC News. "I want to be in line. If there are hockey pieces we'd love to have them here."

Gwizd says he'd like to see the time capsule passed along to the Hall of Fame too, "because it's hockey history, right? Everybody should see it."

What do you feel about this article?

why does Loblaws grab it?this sounds like part of hockey history.Even if the property has been sold the new owners should acknowledge that what they have found was not intended for a grocery chain

Give them a chance for crying out loud.

No chances. Something of this kind of historical value simply does not belong in a grocery store. There is no discussion to he had here. I've dealt with the Weston family, and they are nothing but greedy narcissistic little pricks.

They will put in on display and charge admission, the good old American way.

Does it contain ANYTHING like an instruction manual on how to win a few games? the way Loblaws grabbed it you would think it had a signing frog in it!!

Thank you Rip, I was already laughing by the first part of the comment about maybe the manual might tell the Leefs how to win a game, when I got to the Michigan J Frog part. I was laughing so hard at work, my colleagues will think I've lost it.

yeah........the garderns is NOT just hockey history, it goes way deeper and way further - it's Toronto sports history, it's NHL history, it's Canada history, it's hockey fans everywhere history, it's depression (they now ABHORE that word, don't they?) history, and it's no way on god's green earth Loblaws (Galen Weston) history other than they happen to be the current owners of the building it was discovered in......
So the media is going to play this one as far and as long and hard as they can.... ha ha ha!

I can't believe that they just took it. They did not build the Gardens, they certainly did not bury the time capsul. It should have been immediately given to the city and from there opened in public with live tv. Depending on the contents it should then go to a museum or the Hockey Hall of Fame. It seems there is no sense of community responsability, or even an understanding of right and wrong. A low brow reaction from a low brow company.

There's apparently a letter in the time capsule from a disgruntled Leafs fan which bemoans "When will these jokers ever win the Cup!" Harold Ballard replies: "We're working on it but probably not in your lifetime"

I doubt that Loblaws will just simply give historical pieces of Canada's game over to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Not without a price anyways, a steep price. If they do then you can be sure they're going to milk it for all the publicity it can get.
    • asdgag  •  7 months ago
for a second the leafs thought they could use it to travel back in time to the 60s when they actually dominated the league
    • KC Jones  •  7 months ago
Loblaws owns Maple Leaf Gardens now. They are turning it into a Superstore or whatever. Since they bought it, the time capsule belongs to them. They should release the contents to the public.
