Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson has urged his foster son to turn himself in Richmond RCMP after a warrant was issued for the 21-year-old’s arrest.
Jinagh Farrouch Navas-Rivas, who lived with Robertson’s family for two years ending in 2009, faces two counts of trafficking in controlled substances in Richmond and in Vancouver, as well as one count of manufacturing or transferring a firearm. The charges were laid in November and early December.
Robertson, who is vacationing with his family in Hawaii, said he only found out about the charges against his foster son on Thursday. He and his wife have three other children.
“I am disappointed to hear that Jinagh is wanted by the Richmond RCMP and I urge him to turn himself into the police immediately,” he said in a written statement Thursday. “Out of respect for the ongoing investigation, I will refrain from commenting further at this time.”
Robertson said Navas-Rivas has been on his own since June 2009.
Leslie James Miller, Willie Sing Cheung Truong, Vinh Hoang Le, and Pui Kwok Ma face the same drug charges as Navas-Rivas. The alleged offenders are in their early 20s with the exception of Ma, who is 47.
Le is facing 14 counts of drug trafficking that date back to June 2011.
Miller was previously charged with possessing a restricted firearm with ammunition. He also pleaded guilty to charges of assault that stem from a dispute involving several other men that turned violent at a 2005 New Year’s Eve party in West Vancouver. He was given credit for three months served in prison, and was put on probation for a year.
A Richmond RCMP spokesman said details about Navas-Rivas’ case will be provided on Friday.
