McCanick stars remember Cory Monteith

Cory Monteith plays a man of mystery at the centre of the thriller McCanick.

The performance represented a departure for the Canadian actor best known for his role in the TV show Glee. But when Monteith died of a combination drug and alcohol overdose in July 2013 McCanick became his final film.

In the film Monteith plays Simon Weeks, a criminal released from jail and hunted by a renegade cop played by David Morse.

Although he and Monteith didn't share a lot of screen time, Morse told CBC News at the film's premiere at TIFF 2013 that he was impressed by the actor who had to "make himself incredibly vulnerable, so different from who we knew him as."

The character of a former drug dealer on the run is dramatically different from the freshly-scrubbed Finn of the TV musical Glee, but Morse said the role was a way for Monteith to share other parts of his life.

Director Josh C.Waller shared Morse's admiration of Monteith and said Cory "knew Glee was not going to last forever."

In the end, Monteith was one of the few actors to see the final film. Waller says Monteith was enormously proud and couldn't wait to share the news.

Waller and Morse reflect on working with the late star in the attached video.

McCanick goes on sale today on DVD, Blu-ray Blue and VOD.
