Meat scraps found in Porter Creek not poisoned: Whitehorse RCMP

Whitehorse RCMP say meat scraps found on some Porter Creek lawns earlier this month were not contaminated and are not related to their investigation into several dog poisonings in the neighbourhood.

The meat scraps were found a few weeks after two dogs died and another became ill. RCMP later confirmed that all three dogs had consumed strychnine, a common component of rat poison.

Police also said all three dogs had consumed meat.

The dog poisonings rattled people in Porter Creek, some saying they were afraid for their children, and their pets. RCMP urged residents to be vigilant.

On Saturday, police say what appears to be ground meat was found on rocks along a paved trail, this time in the Takhini North neighbourhood.

A resident, who posted a picture on Facebook, says it looked more like burnt falafel. The substance has been sent for analysis.

A community meeting is planned tonight at 7 p.m. at Porter Creek Secondary School to talk about the recent dog poisonings. Representatives from the RCMP, Whitehorse bylaw services will be on hand to answer questions, along with a veterinarian and some local politicians.
