Men Stressed Most by Work, Women by Life

While personal matters such as family problems and living situations might cause the most stress for women, new research shows it's on-the-job issues that cause men the most anxiety.

A study by Polaris Marketing Research regarding sources of stress revealed that men were more likely to say work issues were causing them angst, while women were significantly more likely to cite financial issues, lack of time, family problems, living situation and relationship issues.

[3 Most Common Causes of Workplace Stress]

While both men and women cited watching television as their top way to relieve stress, their other unwinding tricks varied.

According to the research, women are more likely to sleep, listen to music, surf the Internet, socialize, pray, read a book, write in a journal or eat their favorite comfort foods, while men were more likely to play video games, exercise and have a drink to help relax.

"While women have more stressors in their lives, they also use more diverse ways of relieving stress," said Polaris President Jan Carlson.

Overall, the study found that women perceive themselves to be more stressed than men – but they also said their stress levels are lower than they were last year. Men, meanwhile, were more likely to rate their stress levels the same as they were one year ago.

The research was based on surveys of more than 1,200 U.S. residents.

that's because women who stay at home become lazy.they have a whole week to do laundry and clean. but they'd rather wait until fri and whine about how much work they have to do. well try turning off oprah, don't get coffee 5 days a week and throw in a couple of push-ups!

Men are stressed because of work; and we work to make enough $$$ to impress women, who always need to be impressed more each time. Women are stressed at life; women spend their lives proving how they don't need a man, then get depressed because they don't have a good man. Well, I guess I'm not talking about All men and All women, but..........................

Men admitting that the women stress them more would be suicidal.......and probably eliminate the one thing that reduces stress on them the most. Just no win.

i spend 2-3 months a year at home and i have 4 kids(2.4,4,7), the rest of the time i'm out of town. when i'm home it is like a vacation. i get all of my house work done on mon-tue. and the rest of the week is free. if you can't get your work done in 2 days then you are a lazy fool (try turning the tv off.. and yes my kids are home with me when i'm at home.

And what do the tiny children do the other 9 or 10 months of the year? Are they cryogenically frozen? Do you stash them in a closet? Inquiring minds want to know...

I do agree with this article. My wife complains about kid stress and home stress all the time, and my #1 stress is work. I think it has something to do with the fact that most men end up working a job that isn't the job they always dreamed of because they need to support their families. So yeah, we're a miserable bunch.

While men may suffer more stress at work, when they get home they suffer stress from some woman #$%$ / moaning / complaining how stressed THEY are...and ya wonder why we tune you females out and watch TV...

Not nice. I know you only said "some woman". However, there are plenty woman that are the foundation of their families providing love and support while working out of the home to assist in the cash inflow, cook dinner, shop for the house and kids etc... Most woman are special. Maybe you are not appreciating your wife enough. Get her something for Valentine's day and watch her glow. If you do more for her you'll get the good coming back.
      • NamVetBuck 3 months ago
Missy = funny , my wife has the same name. As for her, she gets flowers EVERY month, and that's more than ANY man has done for her. But when women start yapping about how " stressed " they are , and go on and on , we tune them out !

If you look at the historical roles or men and women then the man's role has changed much, much more than the woman's. Men historically have been hunters, so their day was spent hunting and then staring at a fire. The hunting took all sorts of energies that we just don't use today. Sitting behind a desk or standing at a checkout is not hunting. Women historically have been more social and have dealt with the stress of raising children and holding down the fort, so to speak, by building common bonds with other women. Today's world favors the woman's mechanisms for dealing with stress. In America, men come home, drink, sit in fornt of the tv (fire) and maybe exercise (hunt) a littel, however it is not uncommon for European men to sing and dance together which is a great social stress reliever.

What I am saying is that we have created a world that has outpaced nature and we are no longer in balance. We have yet learned how to live easily within this new, fast paced, over crowded world. I mean, up until 100 years ago, for a million years, man could not go faster than a horse. Now, everyday, we drive 70mph.

Women are so stressed because they have been taught they don't have to have 'normal" lives, they all deserve to live like the Kartrashians, or the desperate housewives, or Jersey Shore. Oprah ran all the way to the bank with the billions she earned building up that empire...

Women would be better off not listening to that crap. Don't turn on the Oprah Network, don't buy that cosmo mag, don't listen to all your whiny friends on failbook. Life sucks, life is hard, deal with it.
      • OuterLimits 3 months ago
No, women are stressed out because they still handle the majority of the childrearing and housekeeping chores, plus work full time. Idiot.

if women lead more stressful lives then men, why do they outlive them? women have to make such stressful daytime decisions...where to meet the girls for coffee, when to drop the kids off at daycare, when should i go to the gym or for a walk with the girls..#$%$ article.
