Mike Allen to remain in Alberta legislature

Mike Allen has announced he will stay on as the MLA for Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo for the remainder of his term in office.

Allen, who was charged with soliciting a prostitute in St. Paul, Minn. last July, said he would consult with his constituents before making a decision about his future.

"I have spent many hours in private and public meetings. I have also attended many events over the last three months, having that same conversation," he wrote in a statement sent to the media late Friday afternoon.

"Those I have met have been very honest and direct about their feelings on this issue. I acknowledge I have hurt and disappointed many, especially those who elected me. I say again to all of you – I apologize."

Allen resigned from the Progressive Conservative caucus the day after the arrest, but remained in the legislature as an independent.

In his statement, Allen promised to serve his constituents to the best of his ability.

"I expect to be held to a higher standard as a result of my previous action," he said. "I promise to work tirelessly to regain the trust I have lost through this period."

Allen said he would announce before the fall sitting of the legislature started on Monday whether he planned to stay on.

Allen's case is scheduled to be back in court on Nov. 13. He has been offered a plea deal.
