Missing B.C. man found living under new identity

One of five young Vancouver men at the centre of a police appeal has been found alive and well, living in a small B.C. town under a different name.

Twenty-nine year old Daniel Holt was reported missing by his mother last September, but was recognised by someone in his new community after police made a televised appeal for help in finding the five men last week.

Const. Lindsey Houghton said the person who recognised Holt put him in touch with Vancouver police.

"Police spoke to Mr Holt and confirmed it was him, he wanted to leave the community and didn't want people to know where he was going," Houghton said.

Houghton didn't elaborate on the reasons Holt had for leaving Vancouver, but says his actions weren't illegal.

Holt was one of five men who disappeared from Vancouver last year, leaving police baffled as to their whereabouts.

The four men still missing are Permadech Tatti, Mitchell Gallivan, Brian Mbaruk and Mathew Huszar, all aged between 19 and 25.

None of their disappearances has any evidence of foul play, but all of the cases are otherwise unique.

Of more than 3,500 people reported missing in Vancouver last year, these four men are now the only ones who have not been found.

I myself have felt like doing the same thing at times / however he might have left a note so friends and family were not quite as stressed.

Sometimes people may just want to start again, not necessay from doing anything illeagal, They may have a very large family or one that is very well known and just want to be on their own , I think he might have explained to his mother that he was leaving but not to try and get a hold of him because he didnt want to be found.

Its ok to go away but let your family know they would be just sick with worry. You should sit down and have a nice long talk with them I know, they have spent many sleepless nights. I think its selfish to do that to your family they love you.

Perhaps the lesson here is for those who are leaving to contact the police three days after departure so that when family report them gone, the police can just say, Yes, indeed.

I agree. What a waste of manpower and tax dollars looking for this guy. That time and money could have been spent looking for a missing child! This guy is selfish.

He should at least tell his mother and the reason she would be more at ease.

I AM GLAD HE IS ALIVE AND WELL, HE MAY OF HAD MANY REASONS FOR DISAPPEARING PERSONALLY.

I get that people want to do what he did but at least let their families know their intentions instead of having a search party, and people worrying for them - on the other hand - the families just might let everyone know where they are.

There needs to be something put into place for law abiding citizens to be able to change their names, lives and move on because sometime the people in their lives are doing more harm than good and its just best to disapear. Now thanks to the medica this guys cover is blown. What an invasion of privacy.

His Mother should have been told by him that was leaving town even if he didn't say where. She must have been sick worrying if anything happened to him. However it's wonderful he is fine.

If he didn't do anything illegal, leave him alone. My mother reported me missing once when I was in my 20s(!) because I hadn't called her in a week. We lived in different provinces, and yet she still had to butt in. And no, I didn't call her regularly to begin with. The police found me by looking me up in the phone book...

OTTAWA–Canada's border agency has lost track of 41,000 illegal immigrants, and this is "jeopardizing the integrity of Canada's immigration program," Auditor General Sheila Fraser says.
