SQUAMISH, B.C. - A young Squamish, B.C., girl is recovering from a cougar attack near her Howe Sound home and her mom is being hailed for saving the little girl.

Cougars only attack for food. This cougar was looking for a meal and small people, dogs and cats are easy targets. Thanks to the bravery of the mother her daughter will live. Other people may have fled in fear. Any animal that attacks a human will be hunted down and killed. This is because the animal has no fear of humans and have a high probability of doing so again. Vancouver island has the highest population of cougar in the world.

There are so many stories on t v about mothers killing their children, fathers slaughtering their whole families.......... now this is what a real mom does! She would lay down her life to protect her child. I hope the little girl heals well and that the attack leaves no scars. A HUGE bouquet of roses to mom!

But oh my God, it truly is amazing that both mother and daughter are alive. A mothers love is a force to be reckoned with. This is just more proof on how far we will go to protect our own. Praises to the mother for doing what loving mothers do!

Once a wild animal tastes human blood, it will keep coming back to the same area to hunt. It is their instinct. Unfotunately, this cougar had to be shot. Sometimes, it is possible to catch and release a wild animal back into the forests. However, as they already reside in Squamish...Rocky Mountain terrritory...it really was not probable to save the cougar. Yes, we are learning to cohabitate with the wild as we have destroyed land, but it does not mean we place their lives above our own.

A hero is a person who puts themselves in harm's way for the sole purpose of protecting someone else. The fact that it was her own child is irrelevant. The cougar was just doing what cougers do. I think they should have just transplanted it. I should say I don't have all the facts and there may have been a legitimate reason to kill the animal. The possibility of rabies or maybe puting a couger in another location could screw up another eco system. No mater what you do there will be consiquences.

This is a never ending story where people like to think they can tread where wild animals live and try to SURVIVE The very sad part is that the cougar knew no different as he was stalking a prey which to him is part of his survival but so sad he is destroyed because he was doing just that, trying to survive . Keep putting down the bears, cougars and any animals that dare to try and survive on their land and soon in years to come they will be endangered and DISTINCT!! Give them their space!!!

Not sure why there is confusion why the cougar attacked. They are predators and the kid no doubt was an easy meal. On the hero topic, the mother is a hero. Many people would like to think they would wrestle a cougar to save their child but it takes courage. I suspect many other people would run for help rather than confront the cougar. Good job mom.
