Mother upset over apparent misdiagnosis at new Montreal Children's

Alexis Walker says her two-year-old son spent four days limping on a broken foot after a doctor at the new McGill University Health Centre superhospital told her it wasn't broken.

It was only after a different doctor called to say it was broken that Nikita was fitted with a cast.

Walker said Nikita was playing at daycare when he fell awkwardly and hurt his foot. He began to limp and chose to crawl instead of walk, so she took him the new Montreal Children's Hospital at the Glen site to be examined.

She said Nikita received X-rays and the doctor she saw was dismissive. Instead of being taken to a consultation room, the doctor came out to them in the waiting room, saying it was only a sprain.

But when Walker got home, Nikita refused to walk.

"He wasn't interested in playing, he was really really fussy," she said.

"He didn't want to eat, didn't want to sit, didn't want to be held. He was inconsolable."

Four days after the original diagnosis, another doctor called to say he had taken a look at the x-rays and said Nikita had broken his foot.

Walker said she is furious.

"We are talking about a baby, a 21-month year old, that doesn't have the language skills to vocalize to me or his father that he's in pain and that it's not getting better, it's getting worse," she said.

The MUHC responded in a statement. saying it has "a process in place where families can contact our ombudsman if they are unhappy with the care they received, and therefore cannot comment on such complaints."

Walker said she has already filed her complaint with the ombudsman.
