Motorcycle rider survives crash near Ponoka

Police say a man was lucky to survive a crash on the QEII Highway this morning after his motorcyle rolled over more than a dozen times.

"It's really quite great news, especially on a long weekend when we hear quite sad stories," said RCMP Sgt. Steve Vince.

Vince says the rider was travelling south on the highway near Ponoka when he had to hit the brakes to avoid a vehicle in front of him.

"This unfortunately resulted in the motorcycle tire locking up and the driver losing control of the bike," he said.

Witnesses reported that the man's motorcycle then flipped over, rolling about 15 times before coming to rest.

Despite the seriousness of the crash, Vince said the rider suffered only minor injuries.

He was taken to hospital and quickly released.

Vince said the rider was wearing proper safety equipment and that speed is not considered a factor.

Highway 2 crash near Aldersyde

The crash was the first of two on the highway today. A couple hours later, a single-vehicle rollover near Aldersyde, south of Calgary, injured three people.

RCMP say a woman and two children were taken to hospital in Calgary, all with non-life-threatening injuries.
