Angelina Jolie’s tabloid baiting star power might be working against critics taking her feature directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, seriously. That’s unfortunate because Jolie’s nightmarish and yet reportedly authentic anti-romance is a work that’s dark and artful and as painful to endure as it is fascinating. In the early ’90s, as the Bosnian war rages and Serbian forces increase their ethnic cleansing of Bosnian civilians, a young woman (Marjanovic) is spared the relentless physical and sexual assaults and humiliations of her fellow prisoner at the hands of the soldiers by a Serb general (Kostic) who not-so-secretly loves her. A masochistic, twisted relationship develops between the two. But is Marjanovic really in love with her conflicted captor/lover or is she just using him?
