N.B. poor to pay dentists up front

People living on provincial government assistance in New Brunswick are wondering how they'll afford to get their teeth fixed since the province's current contract with the New Brunswick Dental Society expires Saturday.

As of next week, dentists will be demanding payment up front.

Contract talks broke down this month when the province demanded that dentists start collecting cash co-payments from assistance clients.

Dentists say they will stop treating assistance clients — of which there are about 51,000 in N.B. — unless they get paid up front either by the patient or their case worker.

The New Brunswick Dental Society has been trying to negotiate a new contract with the provincial government for more than a year.

A tentative agreement reached in August would have increased their payments to 80 per cent of regular fees, but the government rejected that deal.

Dentists in New Brunswick get the lowest rates in the Atlantic provinces for treating people on assistance.

They can bill for less than 70 per cent of their normal fees.

Dentists say they can't afford that kind of subsidy — they wanted a raise.

Instead the province wants them to lower that to 56 per cent, and get assistance clients to pay the difference.

Kent Orlando, president of New Brunswick Dental Society, said dentists will try to continue services to social development clients next week, but they may face delays.

"We would either expect the patients to pay for the service up front and get reimbursed from social development on their own, or get an estimate from the dentist on the cost of treatment and then get payment from case workers or social development," Orlando said.

"It's really up to them to determine how they're going to arrange for payment."

Stephanie Doiron said she's in constant pain from 10 cavities and a broken tooth. Her dentist said she needs $2,500 worth of dental work.

As a single mother on income assistance, she could get up to $800 a year of dental work covered by the province.

"The pain in my mouth is almost as bad as giving birth," Doiron said.

But Doiron, who has a new daughter, may have to come up with all the money herself.

"I'm nursing my daughter right now but I'd like to go back to work. You know, it's bad enough that I have a broken tooth but if all my teeth have to be pulled or something, I don't even want to smile," she said.

The province said it has a contingency plan but won't say what it is.

What about the working poor, and by the way who came up with this Client bull, they are on welfare or at the very least social assistance,So much for political correctness and speak think,Orwell was right make the language mush and it ceases to be a means of any real transfer of information.

Shame on the dentist and the government of N.B. what a discusting bunch. They all need to be horse whipped into sense. Taking advantage of the most vulnerable group in society, as well as seniors, leaves a legacy of insensitive professionals and government cronies. How uncivilized.

Dentists want way to much money for their service. they know most cannot afford it yet they make you take a few x-rays at seventy-five bux a pop, add more office visits then needed at fifty to a hundred bux a visit , they know they are ripping people off, yet they still want more,

Since when it is the governments fault that we cant afford dental care. Stay in school, get a good job with benefits, THEN have kids and make sure you can look after then before demanding the goverment to pay your bills, which WE pay for with our tax dollars. I am getting so sick of the poor me's out there!!!

What a charming reply that completely ignores reality. Jobs don't magically appear, school costs thousands of dollars a year and there's no guarantee of a job when you get out. Nobody's demanding anything. Social assistance recipients are people, just like you. While there are some chronic abusers of the system, there are just as many who are victims of the government's chronic mismanagement of the economy and the people of New Brunswick. Try applying for a job, smartass. Do it without a phone, or resources like a car or money for decent clothes. Show up late because the bus decided not to show up for an hour. Present a resume that has gaps in it or low-end service industry jobs because you needed to make money just to survive. I'm so sick of this "Go to school and get a good job" fairytale mentality that you ignorant, smug, entitled idiots have.

Having been without dental insurance for most of my life until recently, I can sympathize with what people on assistance are facing. My husband and I took care of our kids' teeth and left ours which was a mistake because bad teeth can lead to other health issues like heart problems. And the place where a tooth abcess ate through the jaw bone into the sinus cavity still bothers me 25 years later. Bottom line to me is that providing high dental coverage actually saves money by preventing major health problems which lead to more doctor visits which over tax our health care system........

wow, the government is really at it this time...lets take from the poorest in our society, lets take from the ones who have very low self esteem, and self confidence and make it even worse!! I am so sick and tired of listening to people bash the low income people of our society...not everyone is on assistance by choice, SOME people have had a very bad turn in their luck and have no option but to file for assistance. What about those mothers who had a full time job, making good money, and their husbands passed away leaving them to raise 2-3 children on their own, OR our seniors, some can't work....come on, now....lets not label everyone that is on assistance "LAZY", unless you have walked a day in someones shoes, DO NOT judge that person. We have no right as a society to judge people. LOVE IS LOUDER. Lets give a hand up, not a hand out. Yes as in all situations, some take advantage of it..but then how is that any different than the rich people who try to get out of paying their taxes? thats cheating the government as well, is it not? --Its going to take more money in the long run, when they begin running into major health concerns from dental issues...heart problems, absesses, infections due to untreated absesses!!! I say again LOVE IS LOUDER!!!
