NATO recalls staff in Kabul ministries after officer deaths

KABUL (Reuters) - NATO's top commander in Afghanistan, General John Allen, said on Saturday he was recalling all staff working at ministries in the Afghan capital after two American officers were shot dead inside the Interior Ministry.

"For obvious force protection reasons, I have also taken immediate measures to recall all other ISAF personnel working in ministries in and around Kabul," Allen said in a statement.

It will be a great blunder to withdraw our troops from Afghanistan at this juncture. What is needed is to establish the facts related to burning of Holy Quran, and prevent it from happening again. It should not have happened in the first place. Following the Russian defeat in Afghanistan, and according to Pakistani reports, USA withdrew from both Afghanistan and Pakistan leaving them to sort out the mess created by the war. Pakistan was saddled with millions of Afghan refugees and to care for them. Soon after, President General Zia-ul-Haq along with his several senior Military officers and US Ambassador were killed in a mysterious Helicopter crash. Afghanistan was destabilized locally by sectarian violence & struggle for power, most significantly between Pushtoon and Non-Pushtoon (Northern Alliance) citizenry. Finally, Pushtoon under the banner of Taliban established the Government which, in absence of any American support, was financially supported by Alqaeda. That is how Taliban Government became beholden to Alqaeda. America must not repeat the same mistake. There is a continuing struggle for power grab going on within the present Afghan Government; this was so admitted even by Sen John Kerry, Chair Foreign Relations Committee, after return from his last visit to Afghanistan. Violent events that have transpired over recent years in Kabul and around it testify to this struggle. Pakistan, which was blamed for some of these, had nothing to gain from these events. America, before its departure by 2014, must do its utmost to encourage reconciliation between the waring factions in the present set up, and help establish a truly democratic form of Government with proportional representation by various factions.

Afghanistan does not need, or want NATO forces there. So we should pack up and leave. If there are people there that want NATO protection, maybe they should talk louder than the militants that are killing the people that are in charge of protecting them. I don't see that happening. The people there are cowards.

Good move. Now withdraw the troops from that country. It seems that nothing more could be done to curb the violent protests and regain peace and stability. There are times when it's important to just cut losses and move on. Leave the Afghan government and people to sort out their lives in the way they best know.

Egypt to pick Islamist or military man as president

CAIRO (Reuters) - The Muslim Brotherhood said on Friday its candidate in Egypt's first free presidential vote would fight a run-off next month with ex-air force chief Ahmed Shafiq, the last prime minister of deposed leader Hosni Mubarak. This week's first-round vote has polarised Egyptians between those determined to avoid handing the presidency back to a man from Mubarak's era and those fearing an Islamist monopoly of ruling institutions.
