US 'surge' troops from 1-30 Infantry Battalion return to their patrol base following a search for illegal weapons along the Tigris river, south of Baghdad in 2007. The top US military officer on Wednesday held out the possibility of a draw-down of American forces from Afghanistan within a few years, citing the troop 'surge' in Iraq as a model.
