Ontario child porn bust snares 60

Police in Ontario have arrested 60 men — including a daycare worker — and charged them with hundreds of child pornography offences.

The co-ordinated raids by 24 police forces across Ontario picked up the suspects in the days leading up to Thursday's announcement.

"The is one of the largest co-ordinated efforts of its kind in Ontario," said Det.-Sgt. Frank Goldschmidt of the Ontario Provincial Police. "We anticipate there will be several more charged."

Goldschmidt said police from Windsor, London, Niagara, Toronto, Barrie, Sudbury, Ottawa — virtually every major centre in the province — participated in the sweep.

In total 76 search warrants were executed and 60 males arrested — including three people who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

"They come from all walks of life. All occupations … a daycare worker was arrested — and all different age groups, as well." said Goldschmidt.

Initially police have laid 213 charges for possessing, making distributing and accessing child porn. They say there could be more charges as their investigation continues.

"I'm also gratified to report that 22 victims have been identified," though Goldschmidt said he was not at liberty to provide any further information about the victims.

The unusually large police news conference, held at a hotel in Vaughan, Ont., just north of Toronto, was also a way of highlighting what investigators say is a fast-growing crime in Canada's most populous province.

Police said the 60 individuals taken into custody were found after police uncovered nearly 9,000 IP address linked to child pornography. The IP addresses can be found in every major centre in Ontario and led police to say that the problem of child pornography is no longer a strictly "urban" crime.

"In any of the Canadian crime trends this is probably one of the only crimes that is still on a fairly substantial increase," Goldschmidt said.

Police did not say if they were gathering evidence on the other IP addresses.

But, Goldschmidt said, advances in technology are allowing those interested in child pornography easier access and sharing of files. "We've noticed that the numbers are just steadily increasing."

Police said they could not say if the men were operating as a ring. "At this point in time it is even too early to say if these people were connected with one another," said Goldschmidt.

He said he believed they were operating individually.

That show is disgusting, I agree. Each and every one of those people in there that do not have kids in the pageants or do not have a significant interest (monetarily) in the pageant itself is suspect to me.

I can't believe people treat our children this way. There has to be a medical proceedure that will correct this defect.

goddamn people need to be kept in prison for rest of their lives if convicted. This is just sick. If you let them go from prison they will just run to another country and continue their disgusting acts.

And I agree with the person who said get that Toddlers & Tiara off the air - what the hell is wrong with people these days!!! What the hell is wrong with the parents of these innocent little girls - its disgusting how they parade these children around with make up, nails, fake hair, fake tanned bodies...it makes me sick to my stomach! These parents should be charged with child abuse!!!! And the network that has this show on should be charged as well! This world is a mess!

I agree with you! My 5 year old daughter does ballet & when it comes to picture day & recital they tell us to put make up on them! I was disgusted but of course my daughter would be so sad being the only one with out make up. We compromise & just put very light tinted lip gloss & a touch of eye shadow.. But some of the mothers did a full make over! I told the owner flat out the day she hands out skimpy recital outfits (since she's in charge of the outfits) is the day my daughter no longer dances for her company! It's disgusting some of the outfits the girls come out in; I don't mind the body suit & tutus, but one number came out in tops showing off their stomachs just below the breast & mini skirts!

Preferably after they have been found guilty. Not before. There was a guy from Winnipeg a few years ago who was accused and ended up commiting suicide. Turned out his credit card number was stolen off his computer and ended up on some list on a shady website. He lost his job, his family, everything. All over an accusation.

the more of these people that are in jail the better. one question, if none of these 50 are part of a pedophile ring why are they all rounded up at once? i hope the police aren't allowing some to continue this practice until they get a quota for sensationalism. get them all off the streets asap

The problem seems to be deeply rooted since we hear about this every day. Maybe it is time for a long look about what cause people to be attracted to kids. Lets pull our heads out of the sand and deal with it.

It is shocking just how wide spread this is. Obviously as usual it is more of an offence
to not buckle your seat belt than to trade in child porn. Mandatory long jail terms is one of the answers. So much for Harper's tough on crime or are the Liberals blocking that leges-
lation too. There are lots of trees in B.C. so Hang them (male and female) and leave them to rot.

As a small-l liberal, I have always been skeptical of the Harper govt's law-and-order spending increases, particularly at a time when most crimes are on the decrease.
The exception to this should be child protection. We should be recruiting the best and brightest computer science graduates to our police forces (and paying whatever it takes to keep them) so that purveyors and users of internet child porn face real consequences for their pursuing their sick desires.

The adults who find this arousing or entertaining need help, the people who force children into sex, and then make videos of it are the ones who belong in prison, forever. Those poor children have had their childhood stolen, their dignity crushed and their trust in adults warped, forever. There is no cure for paedophilia - it is like rabies, and the perverts should not be around anyone who is vulnerable. Even physical and chemical castration doesn't work, the sickos will use whatever available to harm their victim. IMO ...we need to go back to the "ship them all off to a prison island days".(not Australia this time though, somewhere uninhabitable) If they were sterilized the whack jobs eventually die off.
