Orders of the Day - Focus On The Economy, everyone!

Fresh from his New Year interview with CBC chief correspondent Peter Mansbridge, the prime minister does a day trip to Saguenay, where he will smile for the cameras and deliver remarks alongside Transport Minister Denis Lebel and Mayor Jean Tremblay at the Pavilion des Croisieres before heading off to an "Economic Roundtable".

On the opposition front, Interim NDP Leader Nycole Turmel heads to Montreal, where she will "discuss poverty and employment training" at the Chica Pop Restaurant. She then treks off to Grand-Mere, where, accompanied by Quebec NDP MPs Ruth Ellen Brousseau and Robert Aubin, she's slated to hold a media availability on "defection" - specifically, the case of newly reminted NDP-turned-Liberal MP Lise Ste-Denis.

Fresh from his New Year interview

with CBC chief correspondent Peter Mansbridge, the prime minister does a

day trip to Saguenay, where he will smile for the cameras and deliver

remarks alongside Transport Minister Denis Lebel and Mayor Jean Tremblay

at the Pavilion des Croisieres before heading off to an "Economic

    Roundtable".

On the opposition front, Interim NDP Leader Nycole Turmel heads to

Montreal, where she will "discuss poverty and employment training" at

the Chica Pop Restaurant. She then treks off to Grand-Mere, where,

accompanied by Quebec NDP MPs Ruth Ellen Brousseau and Robert Aubin,

she's slated to hold a media availability on "defection" - specifically,

the case of newly reminted NDP-turned-Liberal MP Lise Ste-Denis.

Meanwhile, NDP leadership hopeful Thomas Mulcair hits the party hustings

with a visit to 416/905 country, which may or may not lead to an

undoubtedly awkward crossing of paths with Interim Liberal Leader Bob

Rae, who continues his "Skills and Training Tour" with a Q&A at St.

Lawrence College in Kingston before heading back to his Toronto Centre

riding for a post-convention confab with Young Liberals at a local

    watering hole.

Back on the Hill, NDP MP Olivia Chow discusses plans for "dramatic cuts

to frontline staff and airport security screeners" at Canadian airports,

    including Ottawa.

Also running the precinct media gauntlet: Physicians for a Smoke-Free

Canada, who will warn the government of "dangerous loopholes" in the

current law that need to be closed.

Also worth watching: the Military Police Complaints Commission holds a

case conference on its continuing investigation of the Fynes Complaint.

Out and about in Ottawa and the surrounding region: Public Works

Minister Rona Ambrose, who will be joined by local MP Pierre Poilievre

to announce "federal investments in ... public infrastructure," an event

that even a cursory perusal of the nightly PMO-issued Notable Events

List suggests is likely to repeated, on a smaller scale, at various

sites across the country. Other local MPs tasked with serving as

official political placeholder for spin-off announcements: Mike Wallace

(Burlington Canal Lift Bridge, Hamilton), Jay Aspin (Latchford Dam,

Latchford) and Bob Zimmer (Alaska Highway, Fort Nelson).

Also hitting the ministerial circuit today:

    • ACOA Minister Bernard Valcourt continues his steady but somewhat

shambolic circling of Atlantic Canada by bringing glad tidings to

      Shippagan.

    • In Montreal, Greg Rickford fulfils his duties his parliamentary

secretary duties on behalf of Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Duncan by

discussing a "new project" to support Inuit economic development in

      Northern Quebec.

    • Veterans Affairs Minister Steve Blaney celebrates "exceptional

citizens from British Columbia" at an event at the Delta Hotel Airport

in Richmond, while in Vancouver, Minister of State for Seniors Alice

Wong hosts a roundtable with "stakeholders" to "discuss the economic and

social priorities in advance of Budget 2012."

    • Also in BC: Revenue Minister Gail Shea, who will promote the Children's Arts Tax Credit at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
    • Moving north, Health Minister Leona Agglukaq reveals new support for the Nunavut Fisheries Training Consortium
    • Finally, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty attends the official

unveiling of the 2012 Proof Silver Dollar Coin at the Canadian War

      Museum.
