Oscars: Sacha Baron Cohen Not Banned From Academy Awards

Sacha Baron Cohen isn't banned from Sunday's Oscars, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has reached out to his camp, following a report the actor planned to show up to the event as "The Dictator."

"He's not banned, we're waiting to see what he's going to do," a spokesperson for the Academy told AccessHollywood.com on Wednesday evening.

"We'd love to have him there, but we'd like to hear from him what his intent is," the spokesperson added.

Deadline first reported that Sacha, a star of Best Picture nominee "Hugo," was planning to hit the red carpet on Sunday as his character from his upcoming movie, "The Dictator."

Later, the website reported that the star had been banned from the ceremony. But the Academy spokesperson told Access on Wednesday, they are awaiting a response about the star's plans.

"We've been in contact with his team and they know we're waiting to hear, but we'd love to have him at the show," the spokesperson said.

A rep for Cohen did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Access Hollywood.

Yeah, god forbid someone at the Oscars could have a little fun.

He's a genius and they should let him do what he wants to do. It's part of his art. God knows we need SOME reason to watch. I consider myself a HUGE movie buff and I love most of the films that get nominated every year, but even I just wait til the next day to see the winners.

complete agreement. I'd only watch if he comes in character. I'd be disappointed if he came in another tux.

It's too bad Cohen hasn't been banned. Making movies that are as bad as his should get you a lifetime ban from the Oscars.

Yes, be afraid that Sacha Cohen might make the Academy Awards watchable for once, be very afraid... if people are watching they might see that the Academy Awards are completely meaningless and a total joke....

Curious..the article never "confirmed" that he was actually banned, no one ever said it out right...makes me wonder if his OWN CAMP started this to fuel his already failed career? Riddle me this Sacha... how does one read a script like Hugo and take it and then read this offensive trash (I won't even mention the name of his new movie) you are about to put out and sign on for it? Are you really that... dense sir? Your track record of picking movie scripts sure might need to be reevaluated ... just sayin...

I have never really cared all that much for Sacha Baron Cohen and I have never found anything funny about him or his movies I thought his movies were a heap of horse manure. Sacha Baron Cohen is going to be starring in the upcoming biopic movie Freddie Mercury and the formation of the band Queen leading upto their successful appearance at Live Aid in 1985. Sacha Baron Cohen is going to play Freddie Mercury I just hope that Baron Cohen doesn't ruin Freddie Mercurys reputatoin as a great singer and performer and makes him look like a buffoon. This new movie is going to be made in association with Tribeca Films and screenwriter is Peter Morgan I think the movie is going to be called "A Kind of Magic". Well we will have to wait and see.
