A couple from Hawkesbury, Ont., are well on their way to claiming a $50 million Lotto Max jackpot after passing two out of three steps of an "insider wins" investigation process.
Jo Ann Champagne, 49, and her husband, Gaétan, 51, have had to wait before claiming the prize because they once owned a convenience store that sold lottery tickets.
The couple owned Jo's Depanneur for 12 years before selling it in October, and until recently, Jo Ann was also employed at the store.
The jackpot-winning ticket was purchased at Pharmaprix in Hawkesbury, but because the couple had been employed as lottery retailers within the past year, their lotto claim is being investigated by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation.
The OLG announced Tuesday that the claim has been investigated by the OLG and independently by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario. The final phase of the process is a 30-day hold on the prize, during which time the OLG will publicize the win.
If no other claims on the jackpot are made during that time, the prize will be paid out sometime around Feb. 29, the OLG said.
