The average household's water rate in Ottawa is set to increase by $37.82 a year, or about six per cent, which is higher than predicted.
That means the average annual rate in Ottawa is $668.19, according to Dixon Weir, general manager of the city's environmental services.
The increase was expected but environment committee members estimated it would be closer to four per cent in 2012, 2013 and 2014, the city said last year.
Now the city is predicting an increase of seven per cent in 2013 and 2014, six per cent in 2015 and 2016 and then five per cent in foreseeable future after that.
The 2011 hike was 3.9 per cent, or $23.66, which was the smallest increase for local taxpayers since 2003.
City officials said a number of ongoing projects, as well as the replacement of all pipes on roads has led to higher costs.
