Ottawa West-Nepean, Sudbury, Peterborough byelections on Oct. 19

Three federal ridings in Ontario will hold by-elections on Oct. 19, the fixed election date, to fill the departures of two Conservative MPs and one NDP MP, Elections Canada has announced.

The riding of Ottawa West-Nepean has been vacant since March when former Conservative cabinet minister John Baird officially resigned his seat.

Baird had told the House of Commons in early February he was leaving politics for private industry.

Peterborough has not had a federal representative since November when former Conservative cabinet minister Dean Del Mastro resigned his seat, which came after he was convicted of breaking election laws.

While Former NDP MP Glenn Thibeault announced in December he would resign his seat and run for Kathleen Wynne and the Ontario Liberal Party.

The OPP are investigating allegations the provincial Liberals offered a job or appointment to Andrew Olivier, their Sudbury candidate in 2014, to step aside in favour of Thibeault.

It was not immediately clear what the implications of these votes would be for the broader federal election, expected for the same day.
