Ottawa woman delivers wedding gowns to Africa

An Ottawa woman is granting the wishes of young brides in Kenya by delivering donated wedding gowns to the African country.

Carol Waters, a volunteer with Project Hope Africa, teaches young women how to sew and earn money. She had the idea to bring donated wedding gowns to the Marthar slums of Nairobi when she was last there looking through a student's wedding album.

Waters asked her students if brides ever wore white but was told that only the very wealthy typically can afford to.

"I had the idea that even though you're poor and you live in a slum you could have a dress that for one day you could feel very special," Waters said.

There is more to the plan than making their big day all the more special. Waters also hopes to create a lasting business plan for the recipients of the donated gowns by having them rent out the gowns to other brides for approximately $5 a day.

"The girls could make some money, I would teach them how to wash them, put false hems on them, they could alter them and maybe it would give 10 girls on a Saturday a special day in their life," she said.

Waters is still looking for more dresses to carry with her when she leaves for Kenya in mid-January.

If you have a dress to donate, you can call Waters at 613-235-8461.

Several winters ago, a team of geophysicists from Missouri flew to the eastern edge of Africa, strapped on bulky backpacks and began walking. They were looking for a set of huge stripes in the Tendaho Graben, a place within the Afar Depression of Ethiopia, where Africa's continental crust is stretching thin and a new ocean will eventually form.

Karzai calls for NATO to leave villages; Taliban scrap talks

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai called for NATO troops to leave Afghan villages after 16 civilians died in a shooting rampage by a U.S. soldier, underscoring Afghan fury over the massacre and clouding U.S. exit plans. In a near-simultaneous statement, the Taliban said they were suspending nascent peace talks with the United States seen as a strong chance of ending the country's decade-long war, blaming "shaky, erratic and vague" U.S. statements. • The price of a life? In Afghanistan, it's as little as $210

KABUL (Reuters) - In Afghanistan, if NATO forces kill a member of your family, it is better in terms of money if they come from Germany or Italy than the United States or Britain. In the cold calculation of how much to pay for victims of the decade-old war, British forces have doled out as little as $210, while German forces have paid as much as $25,000, according to a study by the human rights NGO CIVIC. Civilian casualties caused by NATO forces hunting insurgents are a major source of friction …
