The mayor of Pelee Island has taken issue with the accuracy of the 2011 census.
It shows the the island lost 40 per cent of its population since the previous census in 2006.
Pelee Island's official population, according to the census, now stands at 171. That's down from 287 in 2006.
Mayor Rick Masse said there are actually more people living on the island from April to December now.
"I don't really understand and it's something that we need to investigate; how people were counted in our community," Masse said. "If everybody who owns a cottage in our community decided to fill out a census to say that they're living in our community, that number would be closer to 500 to 800 people."
Masse said a residential shift is taking place. More permanent residents have become seasonal residents, but still spend the majority of the year on the island.
"They're not being counted even though they spend more time in our community than they do in our other residence," Masse said.
