Sworn Virgins: Albanian women who choose to live as men
A group of women in Albania who are known as Burrnesha, or sworn virgins, take a vow of chastity in order to dress like men within the largely patriarchal society. Traditionally, women have been treated like property by families, and this practice allows women to act as men do in the society, which includes voting, playing music, owning land, smoking or wearing a watch.
